Un lieve grigiore azzurrato che attanagliava la pianura. Da qui verso il mare, più a sud. Nella nebbia che non distingue, tutto sembra vicino e il vecchio vento di libeccio stenta a disperdere la fitta cappa dei vapori estivi. In quel mattino primordiale, lattiginoso e sconosciuto, arriviamo su questa terra, emersa diremo, a gran fatica. Il signor De Brain salì lentamente la scala che aguzza chiocciolava a perdersi nel buio. “Da qui non si va da nessuna parte !” gridò verso il basso e si stiracchiò godendosi la dolce sensazione di torpore. Sospirò più volte, a lungo. Ripercorrere quel labirinto irreversibile, ancora e ancora, senza soluzione di continuità era per De Brain come il disperdersi nella terra. Rientrare nel grembo, dissolversi nella ripetizione. Non era comunque cosa facile e il buon signore saliva quelle scale mosso più dal pensiero di allargare l’orizzonte piuttosto che da quello di dover dissolvere la ripetizione. Huxley stava tenendo l’ennesima conferenza alla sua allieva assetata di sapere. “Vede Marlyn, va tutto al presente. Quest’universo salva solo chi non c’è dal dovere di testimoniare il passaggio.” “Tutti protagonisti, dunque ? Tutti eroi ?” ribatté Marlyn esterrefatta. Huxley percosse con forza la pipa sull’asse centrale. “Un tema popolare, quello degli Inglesi a Venezia. La laguna e altre ghiottonerie esercitano su turisti e letterati un fascino del tutto particolare. Il movimento inverso, direbbe Goldoni, sprofonda l’Europa nell’acqua salmastra di una terra incerta. Un modo diverso per morire, tra i canali a Venezia e queste sponde di terraferma. La Laguna del Morto, la chiamano, e senza eufemismi. Senza nascondere nulla. Il mare li restituisce, questi corpi senz’anima, ridotti all’essenza, scarnificati da gabbiani e topi, ignari della loro sorte di naufraghi ignari. E’ il resto che se ne va e non torna. Questo resto !” Disse indicando genericamente il luogo, “Pesa sulle forme, le plasma, quasi fosse una condanna di stile. Maledetta cultura di transizione, affoga in alto mare, tra tradizioni ridotte a folklore e meraviglie di cibernetica. Noi rifiutiamo il compromesso. Rinneghiamo l’intesa dei mass-media. Rifiutiamo il folklore, la scientificità apparente dei sondaggi, in breve, la classificazione degli organi, e nel contempo ci immergiamo nel domani, che è oggi ! Venezia, Torre di Fine. “Da qui non si va da nessuna parte.” mormorò Huxley. “Meglio.” risuonò la calda voce di Marlyn affacciata alla balaustra di maestra. “La scala finisce qui !” gridò De Brain, giù in fondo, alla donna appollaiata al davanzale e a quell’uomo che paziente studiava le tracce – di un passaggio? – sulle pareti screpolate. Le luci crepuscolari, ingiallite dal muro terrigno, arso di salso, filtravano tra le due assi svelte di un balcone corroso. Una penombra odorosa di muffa reclamava la sua aria stantia, appiccicata, staticamente immota. La scelta del luogo era frutto del caso, anzi meglio, era l’esito di combinazioni calibrate. Una sapiente formula decomposta in cause e condizioni. Certamente, la voglia di percorsi inversi e paralleli nasceva da un intento di globalità. Huxley si strinse nelle spalle. Cominciava da qui o finiva li, che importava. Tanto, qualsiasi punto sarebbe andato bene. Marlyn lo osservava affascinata da quel ricercatore occulto che era. Huxley l’aveva introdotta suo malgrado a quel sapere che l’avrebbe portata alla realizzazione dell’Opera d’Arte più sublime: invisibile e duratura (oltre la tela, diceva, oltre le parole umane, oltre il gesto), produttiva di effetti tangibili su persone e cose. Tensione d’intento e creatività. Atto purificato e distruttivo. Summa causale di esiti molteplici e pluriformi. “Quello di Joice era un gran bel gioco da ragazzi ma tutto proteso a involvere, conchiuso nelle sue metamorfosi aberranti. Qui da noi è diverso. L’opera è nell’attuale divenire, dentro questi giorni, in cui il percorso dell’uomo evolve nel processo purificatore dello spazio-tempo. Una sorta di regressione ideale nei meandri mentali che interseca indissolubilmente i miei percorsi vitali e provoca reciprocamente effetti tangibili, come dicevo.” Marlyn si era distratta. Capiva o percepiva a tratti la lucida follia di un artista dell’ignoto, creatore di opere occulte e memorabili. “L’Opera è nel divenire stesso dei fenomeni”, ripeteva Huxley, “ma si manifesta in percezioni dirette, come conseguenza dell’azione di purificazione di spazio e tempo.” Marlyn stentava a capire. Ammirava segretamente quella figura di precursore, a metà tra l’artista e il pioniere, ricercatore e realizzatore di relazioni senza forma. “Vorrei essere con te” ammise suo malgrado “In questa costruzione consapevole, ma non afferro le tue vere intenzioni. Tutto risuona oscuro perché l’obiettivo non mi è chiaro. Ti piace il gioco di parole ?” Huxley mormorò qualcosa in inglese che suonava come: “La terra chiama i suoi figli !” Poi s’interrompeva per proseguire con enfasi. “Per annientare l’azione nefasta delle cause dobbiamo co-produrre le non cause o meglio azioni apparentemente vuote di senso che proiettandoci negli spazi aperti bilanciano le nostre impronte che ci fanno prede e che inevitabilmente scontiamo.” “Sembra l’inizio di una poetica disincarnata.” Ribadì Marlyn. “Si, lo è !” Esclamò Huxley con devozione. “E’ l’inizio della fase di rientro. E’ la Quarta Fase. Il ripercorrere la spirale a rovescio. Sicuramente torneremo al centro, da dove peraltro non ci siamo mai mossi. Non è un problema di tempo, né di denaro.” “Posso assicurarle che trovo la cosa fanciullesca e colma d’idealismo. La spirale…” Huxley la interruppe “La spirale è solo un simbolo universale. Potrei citarle le equazioni di Minkowsky, ma credo non ci capiremmo. In realtà ritengo che le cose siano estremamente più semplici di quelle che sembrano. Basta adottare una "visione primordiale". Mi spiego meglio e con un esempio. Un uomo si sveglia la mattina, pronto a compiere un lungo elenco di operazioni automatiche di cui percepisce l’indispensabilità, ma non ne afferra il senso globale. Sa, in cuor suo, che ne trarrà un vantaggio. Materiale. Sicuro, materiale. E tutto finisce li. Oltre a questo replicarsi, vi è la percezione che il resto sia inutile, atti compiuti senza un utile apparente. Il non fare dunque deriva dalla somma degli atti spontanei e la visione primordiale è ciò che permette il non fare. Mi scusi Marlyn, mi sono perso nelle mie solite fantasticherie. Ma mi segua ancora, per un attimo. E’ l’Arte quindi che una volta ancora ci fornisce l’ancora di salvezza. Un mezzo raffinato per superare le molte bestialità automatiche di cui siamo preda e per piacere ci attorniamo. Ma le vere prede finali siamo noi. Siamo noi che verremo uccisi. Questo non la turba ?” “Caro John, i suoi ideali ottocenteschi risplendono di luce propria, e forse tutto questo non è più attuale, ai giorni nostri.” Huxley puntò la pipa inarcata verso Tau Ceti, splendente e appena scorta, “Ne vedremo delle belle...” Ammise.
